KATY GEORGIOU

Psychotherapist, journalist, author, podcaster and media expert on music and mental health

About me

I’m Katy Georgiou

As a professional psychotherapist, I’ve worked in private practice, the NHS, psychiatric wards, prisons, GP surgeries, higher education, organisations, and charities.

A significant focus of my professional journey has been at the intersection of mental health and music. Combining my background in music journalism with therapeutic practice in the music industry, I’ve delved into this symbiotic relationship. As a prominent podcaster in the field of music and mental health, I’ve had the opportunity to interview leading researchers, industry figures, and high-profile artists. This has led to guest radio appearances, collaborations on other podcasts, and engagements in workshops and panel discussions. Currently, I provide therapy to musicians and industry professionals through various organisations, including Universal Music UK, the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine, and the Help Musicians Music Minds Matter scheme. Alongside this, I work as a psychotherapist in a GP surgery and as an independent psychotherapist in private practice offering group therapy, individual therapy, relationship counselling and support groups.

In addition to my therapeutic work, I’ve been a freelance journalist for The Times, ELLE, Sunday Times Style, The Guardian, The Independent, Psychologies, NME and many more. I’ve also authored three books published by Hachette UK, exploring themes of therapy and mental health.

My unique perspective and deep understanding of these topics have positioned me as a sought-after commentator and speaker. I frequently contribute to press articles, appear as a guest on radio shows, and speak at events and panels. As a media expert, I am regularly quoted in the press and invited to share insights on current thinking in therapy, mental health and music on radio and TV.

My work

What I do

Journalism

Since 2006, I’ve been writing and sub-editing for both national and international press, including The Times and NME. My expertise covers a wide array of subjects, but I’m particularly passionate about exploring the connections between mental health, music, and the creative and performing arts. Whether it’s delving into the nuances of belly dance or dissecting the influence of Britpop, my work aims to illuminate these intersections while also addressing the impact of mental health on journalists.
